Military History in Potsdam: Basic Research and Historical Education

The Military History Research Office is an institute for historic research, which is part of the Federal Ministry of Defence. The MGFA applies the general methodologies used for the scientific study of history to its studies of military history. The MGFA was established in 1957 and has been in Potsdam since 1994.

The armed forces are portrayed in their interaction with the government, politics, society, law, culture, economy, science, and technology. The history of the WWII, of the German Federal Armed Forces as part of NATO, and also of the former East German Army (NVA) as part of the Warsaw Pact, are the main focuses of the MGFA's work.

The MGFA issues numerous publications in series and the two specialist periodicals, the Military History Journal and Military History: Journal for Historic Education. It operates touring exhibits on history and is in charge of the museums of military history of the German Federal Armed Forces in Dresden and Berlin-Gatow. The inquiry section prepares some 2,500 military history reports per year for the offices of the German Federal Armed Forces, the state administration, and private citizens.
