Canonical Institute

The Canonical Institute was the first institute for ecclesiastical law to be established in the new federal states - the former states of East Germany. The Canonical Institute was attached to Potsdam University at the end of 2002.

The Institute for Catholic Ecclesiastical Law was founded at the suggestion of the Berlin archbishopric and is independently supported by an association and financed through funding from third parties. It has its facilities in the rooms of the Faculty of Law on the Babelsberg campus of the Potsdam University.

The new institute combines and continues numerous scientific projects that were initiated at the Berlin archbishopric. Among other activities, this includes the publication of a renowned scientific journal. Expansion of the range of subjects being studied at the Faculty of Law is also planned.
