Culture in Potsdam

The state capital Potsdam assumes an outstanding position in the rich cultural landscape of the State of Brandenburg.

Potsdam, the city of Prussian palaces and gardens, offers not only a historical heritage, a source of pride known well beyond our state, but also a richly diverse selection of modern culture and art.

In the historic city center the Hans Otto theater, the Nikolaisaal concert hall, the House of Brandenburg-Prussian History, and the Film Museum provide opportunities to enjoy classical, as well as modern, culture.

A new cultural venue is currently under construction on a former industrial estate in the Schiffbauergasse (Shipwright's alley). In the beautiful location along the water, far more than just the new facilities for the Hans Otto theater will be built. In addition to the theater catering to children and youth, the site is also home to the fabrik Potsdam (Potsdam factory) and the Waschhaus (the Wash-House), where a great range of dance, music, and contemporary, interpretative, and fine arts are already offered.

The Potsdam Sanssouci music festival, the Potsdam Schlössernacht (the Night of the Palaces), as well as the Potsdam Dance Days, the UNIDRAM theater festival, and rock and jazz concerts, are all cultural highlights. The special attraction of these cultural events risese from the interaction between the cultural content and the historical ambience of the respective venue itself. And then there are the city's festivals: the Bohemian Weavers Festival in the Nowawes residential quarter, the Festival of Lights on the New Pleasance, and the Tulip festival in the Holländischen Viertel - Dutch Quarter.

Those who enjoy the fashionable scene are also in the right place in Potsdam. Readings, small concerts, and theater performances can be experienced in many different locations throughout the city, even on a boat.

Thus, you may embark upon a cultural journey through literature, theater, fine art, music, film, and museums, and enjoy the Potsdam culture for yourself.
