The Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities has a select membership of some 200 and is an interdisciplinary and international scholarly association. Although newly-constituted in 1992, its tradition dates back to the year 1700 when Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz founded the Kurfürstlich Brandenburgischen Sozietät der Wissenschaften (Royal Brandenburg Scientific Society).
The disciplines of the humanities, work in interdisciplinary teams on scientific and social problems of the future and dialogue between science and the public, are the major fields of the Academy's activities.
About 30 traditional scientific projects, such as dictionaries, publications, documentaries, and bibliographies, make it one of the region's largest non-university research institutions maintaining a profile in the humanities.
Five of these projects of the Academy have their facilities located at the Neuer Markt square in the heart of Potsdam:
- Corpus Vitrearum Medii Aevi: research on stained-glass painting and preparation of an inventory of items of medieval glass paintings
- Leibniz edition: the political writings of the universal scholar
- Kant's collected writings: the lectures and Opus postumum of the Königsberg philosopher
- Jean Paul edition: the correspondence of a best-selling author from the time of Goethe
