Vernissage: Golm Summer Exhibition 2025: Inspired by Pompeii - moving murals by Katrin Seifert in the New Church Golm

A cultural trip to Pompeii and the surrounding Vesuvius cities and the fresco secco technique enabled the painter to create colourful frescoes on canvas. Canvases are prepared with special plaster, the surface of which can later be antiquised. Citizens in Pompeii liked to decorate their houses with colourful floral, animal and mythical motifs, catering to a wide variety of beliefs. The sudden eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D. caused these works of art to disappear under a thick layer of lava within hours. A tragedy for the inhabitants of the time, but a stroke of luck for us, as this was the only way they could be rediscovered through systematic excavations from the 17th century onwards. But time has left its mark. And so Katrin Seifert has set herself the task of painting pictures in the Pompeian style in order to keep the awareness of these treasures alive here too. Because Potsdam is strongly influenced by Pompeii.
