UNESCO World Heritage Days in Potsdam
The palaces and parks of Potsdam and Berlin have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage since December 1990. However, for many residents and visitors of the city, only Sanssouci Palace and Park are known as UNESCO sites. To showcase the diversity and uniqueness of Potsdam's World Heritage, the state capital has been participating in the nationwide UNESCO World Heritage Day since 2006, which takes place on the first Sunday in June each year. These events aim to raise public awareness about the privilege of having a UNESCO World Heritage site and to instill pride in both the residents and guests of the city. They also emphasize the responsibility to care for and preserve the UNESCO World Heritage sites.
The events, held since 2006, aim to make Potsdam's UNESCO World Heritage tangible and experiential. The program offerings provide knowledge, while also approaching the UNESCO World Heritage theme emotionally. The events, with special activities, tours, music, dance, theater, and children's programs, are always well-received by history and culture enthusiasts as well as families.
