The Havel is a flow-regulated river that exhibits little to no floodplain dynamics. The weir in Brandenburg an der Havel ensures that target water levels are maintained. Due to the damming and the nature of the Havel—with its irregular course and lake-like expansions—the flow velocity is very low, and in some of the lakes, the water even exhibits characteristics of still waters. As a result, water level fluctuations in the Havel are very minor compared to other German rivers.
