Stadt und Umland

Die Veränderung begann unmittelbar mit der Friedlichen Revolution. Bis 1989/90 war Golm ein eher verschlafenes Dorf mit 2.000 Einwohnerinnen und Einwohnern im Umland Potsdams. Heute befindet sich hier der größte Forschungsstandort Brandenburgs. Im Wissenschaftspark Potsdam-Golm verbinden sich internationale Spitzenforschung mit forschungsnahem Gewerbe. Zahlreiche Gründungsprojekte in kleinen und mittleren Unternehmen ergänzen den leistungsstarken Standort. Internationalität und Interdisziplinarität kennzeichnen den Wissenschaftspark Potsdam-Golm, in dem mehr als 2.500 Menschen beschäftigt sind und etwa 9.000 Studierende aus dem In- und Ausland lernen.

Ausgangspunkt dieser Entwicklung war die Übernahme der Gebäude der ehemaligen Juristischen Hochschule von der späteren Universität Potsdam. Aus dem früheren Gelände der zentralen Ausbildungsstätte des Ministeriums für Staatssicherheit der DDR entstand nach Rekonstruktionen und Neubauten der neue naturwissenschaftliche Universitätscampus. Um die Jahrtausendwende ergänzten drei Max-Planck-Institute und zwei Fraunhofer-Institute den Forschungsstandort.

Zum Teil sehr kontrovers gestaltete sich die Eingemeindung Golms sowie der Dörfer Groß Glienicke, Fahrland, Neu Fahrland, Marquardt, Satzkorn und Uetz-Paaren nach Potsdam im Zuge der Verwaltungsgebietsreform im Jahr 2003. Während zwei Gemeinden der Angliederung zustimmten, klagten fünf dagegen, letztendlich erfolglos. Potsdam wuchs schlagartig um 11.000 Einwohnerinnen und Einwohner, die Stadtfläche vergrößerte sich um 78 auf 187 Quadratkilometer – Stadt und Umland finden zusammen.

The City and Its Environs

The change began immediately with the Peaceful Revolution. Until 1989/90, Golm had been a rather sleepy village of 2,000 inhabitants in the vicinity of Potsdam. Today, it is Brandenburg's largest research location. The Potsdam-Golm Science Park combines top international research with research-based companies. Numerous start-ups in small and medium-sized enterprises complement the high-performance location. An international and interdisciplinary approach characterizes the Science Park, with over 2,500 employees and about 9,000 students from Germany and abroad.

This development began when the former law school building was taken over by what would become the University of Potsdam. The new campus with its renovated and new buildings for the natural sciences was built on the former site of the central training centre of the GDR’s Ministry of State Security. At the turn of the millennium, three Max Planck Institutes and two Fraunhofer Institutes augmented the research location.

The incorporation of Golm and the villages Gross Glienicke, Fahrland, Neu Fahrland, Marquardt, Satzkorn, and Uetz-Paaren into Potsdam during administrative reforms in 2003 was not without controversy. While two communities agreed to the incorporation, five took legal actions against it but were ultimately unsuccessful. Potsdam rapidly grew by 11,000 inhabitants, the city area increased by 78 to 187 km2 – the city and its surrounding area are coming together.
