Von der Brache zur Stadtmitte

Das Anfang der 2000er Jahre errichtete Fortuna-Portal war der erste sichtbare Schritt zum Wiederaufbau des Potsdamer Stadtschlosses, das im Zweiten Weltkrieg stark beschädigt und dessen Ruine 1959/60 gesprengt wurde. Jahrzehntelang klaffte mitten im Stadtzentrum eine riesige Lücke. Mit einem Theaterneubau, dessen Grundstein am 1. September 1989 gelegt wurde, sollte bis zur 1000-Jahr-Feier 1993 die Zentrumsplanung aus den 1960er Jahren für den Alten Markt abgeschlossen werden.

Nach der Friedlichen Revolution 1989 beschloss die im Mai 1990 frei gewählte Potsdamer Stadtverordnetenversammlung richtungsweisend die Wiederannäherung der Stadtmitte an das historisch gewachsene Stadtbild. Doch auch nach dem dafür notwendigen Abriss des Theaterrohbaus blieb der Alte Markt viele Jahre verwaist. Für den Wiederaufbau des Stadtschlosses fehlten noch ein Nutzungskonzept sowie die Finanzierung.

In dieser Zeit begann die Diskussion über ein neues Parlamentsgebäude des Brandenburger Landtags als Ersatz für den maroden „Kreml“ auf dem Brauhausberg. Verschiedene Standorte waren im Gespräch. Klarheit brachten erst der Landtagsbeschluss für ein neues Gebäude auf dem historischen Grundriss des Stadtschlosses im Mai 2005 und die Befragung der Potsdamer Bürgerschaft im Dezember 2006: Von mehr als 56.000 Einwohnerinnen und Einwohnern votierten 42,8 Prozent für einen Parlamentssitz am Alten Markt. Nach vier Jahren Bauzeit wurde das Gebäude weitgehend in historischem Gewand am Ursprungsort neu errichtet und im Januar 2014 eröffnet. Mit den Gebäuden an der Alten Fahrt und den neuen Innenstadtquartieren ist der Alte Markt wieder die Potsdamer Stadtmitte.

From Fallow Ground to City Centre

Built in the early 2000s, Fortuna Gate was the first visible step towards rebuilding the Potsdam City Palace, which had been severely damaged during World War II; its ruins were razed in 1959/60. For decades, there was a large empty space in the middle of the city centre. With a new theatre building, which had its foundation stone ceremony on 1 September 1989, the plans for the city centre from the 1960s were supposed to have been completed for Alter Markt by the 1000th anniversary in 1993.

After the Peaceful Revolution of 1989, the Potsdam City Council, which was freely elected in May 1990, decided to set a path of rapprochement regarding the city centre’s historical layout. But even after the necessary demolition of the theatre building shell, Alter Markt remained deserted for many years. The reconstruction of the City Palace still needed a utilization concept and funding.

In this period, a debate began about a new building for the Brandenburg parliament as a replacement for the dilapidated “Kremlin” on Brauhausberg Hill. Various locations were under discussion. Clarity to the situation only came with a resolution of the state parliament regarding a new building on the historic site of the City Palace in May 2005 and a survey of Potsdam’s citizens in December 2006: Of over 56,000 inhabitants, 42.8% voted for Alter Markt. After four years of construction, the building was largely rebuilt according to the historical designs at its original location and was inaugurated in January 2014. With the buildings on the Alte Fahrt waterfront and the new urban quarters, Alter Markt is once again Potsdam's city centre.
