Groß Glienicke

Groß Glienicke has been a district of the Brandenburg state capital of Potsdam since October 2003. It is located at the north-west city limits of Potsdam and directly adjoins with the southern border of Berlin. Groß Glienicke can be reached via the major B2 route (Potsdamer Chaussee road) and with the busses of route 638/639.

The district covers an area of 10.25 square kilometers and spreads along the Groß Glienicker See lake, from the Königswald/Sacrower See nature reserve, and to the historic manor house park of Vollang and the Waldsiedlung Nord (north forest settlement). The district has 3,172 inhabitants.

Groß Glienicke is first mentioned in a document recording financial details for the Spandau nunnery in 1267. It initially consisted of a knight's manor and a farmyard. The name comes from the Sorb language (glina = clay). There were settlements on the territory around Groß Glienicke dating from the time of the late Bronze Age. The picturesque location of this jewel of the March, with its proximity to the lakes of the Havel river, as well as agricultural and unique fen landscapes (Giebel-, Schwarzen, Seeburger Fenn, and Upstall), is also a breeding area for more than 40 species of bird, quite possibly an unequalled claim. Among others, it is a habitat for wagtails, ring doves, chiffchaffs, jays, and mallards.
