Projects

In the years to come, Potsdam’s attractions will be further enhanced through the redevelopment and revitalization of the city’s older districts. The following are key projects already underway that will help to shape the future of the centre for commerce and industry that Potsdam has already become:

GO:IN
Construction of a science-oriented technology and innovation centre in Golm Science Park. The project will create a total of 4000 m² of state-of-the-art office and laboratory facilities; of that, 2000 m² will be devoted to biochemical and physics laboratories. Completion scheduled for October 2006.

Expansion of pct
Expansion of the existing “potsdamer centrum für technologie” (pct), through the addition of a new building providing around 6000 m² of usable space. The new building will provide offices and service provision space as well as space suitable for production and workshop space and/or halls and technical industrial and commercial spaces, as needed.
Completion scheduled for 2nd half of 2007.

Campus on Jungfernsee
Engineering/high-tech, education and research will soon be interacting on one of the grounds of “Campus Jungfernsee”, a former military housing facility. The c. 35-ha large site will be home to an innovative community centre with industrial and commercial rental real estate, building sites and urban villas. This project is intended to provide up to 5000 people with extraordinary recreational opportunities, and employment and living conditions in one location in the near future.

Schiffbauergasse
Potsdam’s most progressive cultural and business centre is taking shape at “Schiffbauergasse.” The site is intended to integrate art, culture, business and tourism in one location where high-tech and culture can meet and mingle. Both the software corporation Oracle and VW’s Design Center have already decided in favour of this attractive waterside site.

New State Parliament Building
In the coming years, a new building for Brandenburg’s state parliament will be built on the former site of Potsdam’s Stadtschloss (city palace). The modern, functional building on Potsdam’s Alter Markt (Old Market Square) will be built in the same three-dimensional space that the Stadtschloss once occupied and will retain one of the historic facades of that building in parts. In mid-May 2006 Brandenburg’s finance ministry will issue a call for entries in a combined architect/investor competition for the new parliament building. A consortium should have been selected from among the contestants by mid 2007. The state government hopes construction will begin by mid 2008 and that all work will be completed by the end of 2010. Construction costs alone are currently assessed at 83.5 million euros.

Speicherstadt
The ca. 7-hectare large grounds of Speicherstadt (the former warehouse district), located right by the Havel river in Potsdam, will be redeveloped into a top-flight city district in the coming years. A progressive, non-site-specific “city within the city” concept is being developed for the area. This concept will be applied to certain sections of the property in an initial construction phase. The aim is the “sophisticated redevelopment of the site, aimed at sustainability and quality of life and its integration into the ecosystem of the adjoining areas.”

City Centre: Potsdamer Mitte
Associated with the new Parliament building project there are plans for additional urban development measures and alterations. Initial ideas and concepts are being developed in a planning forum –Planungswerkstatt (www.potsdamer-mitte.de). The following projects are already underway or firmly scheduled to begin:

  • Havel bank development: ca. 10.900 m² of building land / demolition of the theatre building 2006 / new construction possible as of 2007

  • University of Applied Sciences (UAS) complex: ca. 10.100 m² of building land / UAS to move out by 2007 / conversion possible by late 2007

  • Further reconstruction of Stadtkanal (City Canal)
