Potsdam has the densest population of research and scientific facilities of any city in Germany - there are some 3,700 highly-qualified people employed here to vouch for it.

The city's growth into a preferred location for research began as far back as the middle of the 19th century, starting with work in the fields of geodetic research, gravitation research, and astrophysics. Today, the range of scientific institutions has expanded to more than 30 facilities in the fields of the humanities and social studies, geo and environmental sciences, bio and life sciences, physics, and chemistry. Many of these institutions are attached to the Potsdam University or work in close co-operation with it.

The Association of Non-University Research in Brandenburg (LAUF e.V.) was founded in 1999, especially for the support of research in Brandenburg and as a representative for non-university institutions.
