The goal of the GeoForschungsZentrum (GFZ) is to develop an 'earth management' approach through understanding the processes of the earth's system, which will also preserve our planet as the habitat for future generations. This geo science task for the future is thus precautionary research in the broadest sense of the term.

Over the past 10 years, GFZ scientists have made significant contributions to our understanding of the earth system. What were once futuristic concepts in the past have in some ways already become today's realities, and even now the GFZ is developing concepts for tomorrow in co-operation with partners from other research institutions.

This can be seen, for example, in the 'Geo-technologies' program of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the German Research Association, in which the GFZ played a decisive role. Geo-sciences is a part of safeguarding the future - a truly comprehensive program.
