The art gallery, located to the east of Sanssouci palace, was the first building in Germany to serve solely as a museum. Johann Gottfried Büring built it in the middle of the 18th century for the collection of paintings of Frederick II. The works of the Italian, Dutch, and Flemish baroque periods are featured, including paintings by Caravaggio, Rubens, Reni, Rembrandt, and van Dyck.
