Since its reconstruction in 2001, a 120 metres long section of the city canal can once again be viewed in the Yorckstraße (York street). At one time, the canal was 1.9 kilometers long, and this length was the aim for the planned re-construction over the next several years. Originally built for drainage purposes in the 17th century, Frederick Wilhelm I had the canal's course straightened out in the 18th century. Between 1962 and 1965 the canal was filled in. Today, the section between Friedrich-Ebert-Straße and Wilhelm-Staab-Straße is lined by promenades and newly-planted cherry trees and crossed by the span of the Ladenberg bridge.
