Cities with an Historic Inner City

The state capital of Potsdam is a member of the working group Cities with an Historic Inner City,as are the other Brandenburg cities: Belzig, Luckau, Werder, and Prenzlau. When this group was founded in 1992, its primary goal was the promotion of the cities' redevelopment.

Later, in addition to the promotion of the restoration of the valuable historic buildings, a further goal was set: the 29 member cities of the working group wanted to promote their historic city centers for tourism. The working group's logo alludes to the value of tourism in the historical residential quarters.

The city of Potsdam is really blessed with many listed buildings: there are more than 2,000 in the city's official files. The term 'historic city center' is not only applicable to the Holländische Viertel (the Dutch Quarter) and the Second Baroque city expansion, but also to the Weavers' Quarter in Babelsberg.

Over the past few years, many buildings in Potsdam's historic residential quarters have been refurbished with a great deal of detail. They provide an insight into the eventful history of Potsdam and thus invite you to stroll down the city's historic streets and narrow lanes.
